FIRE PREVENTION

Fire Prevention

Mulching provides an effective alternative to burning brush and trees, with a wide range of advantages to the environment and consumer.

Using our state-of-the-art TEREX MULCHING MACHINE to instantly shred dense overgrowth, shrubs, bushes and small trees in place, this method of land clearing results in composting the ground-up vegetation into the soil. The TEREX can mulch existing debris piles containing tree trunks up to 8 inches in diameter.

This innovative technique is highly cost-effective by significantly reducing the man hours needed on clearing projects. It also eliminates the need for time consuming haul away of debris, and creating burn piles that have a negative impact on air quality for our island.

Mulching, as opposed to burning, promotes valuable re-fertilization of the soil, helps control weeds and brush growth, and improves insect control.

What does it mean to be Firewise? Being Firewise is the ability to live safely near a fire-dependent natural community. This depends on the use of Firewise principles to protect homes including landscape design and vegetation management.

What are the three major factors affect fire severity?
Those factors are often depicted in what's called a “fire behavior triangle.” The three major factors in the triangle are: The weather conditions during the fire (wind, temperature, humidity) The topography of the landscape (slope, aspect) The amount, arrangement, and types of fuels that are present during the fire. In their work ‘fuels’ would be areas with a lot of underbrush and such.

How do I Firewise my property?
Firewise techniques include minimizing the risk of home ignition by carefully landscaping around residential structures such as thinning trees and brush and choosing fire-resistant plants, selecting ignition-resistant building materials and positioning structures away from slopes.

What is the purpose of forestry mulching?
Forestry mulching is generally used to clear and manage the vegetation in a wooded area, controlling the spread of invasive species, and restoring wildlife health.

Forestry Mulching and Brush Mastication

Mastication has become a common and cost-effective means for fuel reduction and restoration of open ponderosa pine forest.  There are many benefits of mastication over conventional methods of vegetation management which include the elimination of material to be hauled away or stacked and burned; a beneficial mulch material is left behind. We would like the opportunity to discuss these and other benefits with you and explain how both you and your property may benefit from mastication versus older conventional methods.

Over one hundred years of fire suppression in Western States forests has resulted in more crowded and more fire-susceptible forests. Prior to human intervention to suppress fires, forests experienced frequent low-intensity fires that removed combustible materials such as diseased and dead trees and ladder fuels. Frequent, small-scale, fires in forests stimulated the growth of fire-resistant trees and reduced the incidences of massive, catastrophic, forest fires that we have seen in recent years. Current forestry research indicates that removing forest fuels creates more fire-resistant forests without causing long-term damage to forest resources such as watersheds, soil and wildlife. Recent large-scale fires and insect outbreaks presenting the increased possibility of large-scale fires in western forests have led to a fuel reduction program especially in the wildland-urban interface.

In the past several years, there has been increased awareness of the role that brush and dense stands of trees play in spreading fire, which has driven the effort to reduce fuels around homes – particularly those in the wildland urban/forest interface. This has put pressure on forest landowners to remove trees and brushy vegetation from their properties, but they may not have experience with the best methods of doing this. Forest mastication, or “forest mulching,” is a common method that achieves results.

Some of the Benefits Of Forestry Mastication

  • Removing ladder fuels (brush) helps to reduce fire intensity and reduces the risk to structures from wildfires.
  • Limbing up tress creates separation of the ground fuels from the aerial fuels also known as the tree canopy reducing the risk of a crown fire.
  • Removing brush and smaller trees, from an overpopulated property with increase the nutrients, sunlight and water available to the remaining trees.
  • The remaining trees will grow with more hardiness, and strength enabling them be further resilient to extreme drought, infestation, and the effects wildfire.

Five Benefits of Forestry Mulching

LANDSCAPE EFFECT

Forestry mulching can be done on a plant by plant basis where each shrub is mulched on its original spot. In addition to the attractive layer of mulch, it allows the landowner to pick and choose what vegetation stays and what goes, resulting in a more manicured, landscaped effect.

EROSION CONTROL

Land clearing alone may leave the area with bare ground that will erode from wind and rain. The addition of mulch is very useful in holding the soil in place while protecting the root systems of trees and other vegetation. This erosion control helps preserve both the soil and the foliage.

IMPROVEMENT IN SOIL QUALITY

A natural forest floor is renewed through the breakdown of organic matter as it decays. In the same way, natural mulch delivers nutrients to the soil over time as it breaks down. This helps regenerate the grounds and provides a healthy environment for trees and plants to thrive. Forestry Mulching also mitigates the growth of mold, helping the wooded area avoid fungus related diseases.

CONSERVATION OF TIME AND ENVIRONMENT

Forestry mulching delivers quick results for the amount of work it performs. Its one-step process saves time and the output helps preserve the environment. This is a win-win situation for property owners looking to be good stewards of time, money and the land.

REDUCED NEED FOR EQUIPMENT

Forestry mulching eliminates the need for multiple pieces of heavy equipment by accomplishing the job of excavators, shears, wood chippers and grinders in a single piece of equipment. It also eliminates the need for trucks to haul away debris as there is no waste; all the debris is turned into mulch. A single machine can perform all these different operations, saving time and fuel consumption costs.

Forestry mulching is an essential component of sustainable land management. There are a multitude of benefits for both the property owner and the land itself. Contact us today to get started turning your unruly lot of trees into a managed environment you can be proud of.
